Islami Bank seeks BB help against attacks on branches, ATM booths

Posted by BankInfo on Wed, Feb 27 2013 05:32 am

The Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited has sought help from the Bangladesh Bank following some recent incidents of ‘attack’ on its automated teller machine booths and branches.

The IBBL on February 20 sent a letter signed by its managing director Mohammad Abdul Mannan to the BB, saying that some branches and ATM booths of the bank had recently been attacked and vandalised due to a negative propaganda.

The recent ‘attacks’ and or ‘acts of vandalism’ will create an insecure situation on the general clients of the bank and also make a crisis of confidence, the letter said.

It said that such situation would hamper the reputation of the banking discipline, creating an adverse impact on the country’s gross domestic products.

The IBBL letter said, ‘We desire that the BB as a guardian of the banking sector will take necessary measures in this regard.’

It mentioned that the IBBL had been operating its banking activities as one of the largest scheduled banks in the country, guided and instructed by the BB for the last three decades.

The IBBL is now operating 276 branches and 194 ATM booths across the country approved by the BB to expand its banking services to all walks of life.

The Shahbagh protest, which demanded to ensure capital punishment against the war criminals of 1971, urged people to boycott the business institutions including the IBBL that are linked with the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Under the circumstances,

some branches and ATM booths of IBBL in different parts of the country have recently been vandalised by the protestors.

A BB official told New Age that the central bank has not so far taken decision on how to provide security to Islami Bank against the recent turmoil.
