BRAC bank opens new service booths

BRAC Bank Limited has opened two service booths at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport recently to provide remittance and other banking services to the outbound passengers with a special focus on non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs).

Shafique Alam Mehdi, civil aviation and tourism secretary, formally inaugurated the booths as the chief guest, said a press release.

BRAC Bank plays a vital role in bringing remittance of approximately Tk 45 billion in the country per year, the news release added.

Syed Mahbubur Rahman, managing director and CEO of BRAC Bank, senior officials of Civil Aviation Authority and the bank were also present at the function.

The booths ---‘Probashi Kollyan Booth’ and ‘Probashi Biniyog Booth’ was set up at the departure lounge in terminal 1 and 2 to provide foreign currency exchange services, account opening, remittance advice, information about legal remittance channels and authorised remittance houses, internet banking and investment in capital market facilities to the Bangladeshis expatriates, the statement added.

The civil aviation and tourism secretary praised the role of BRAC Bank for setting up the booths for the well being and convenience of expatriates Bangladeshis. He also hoped that the booths would play a vital role in promoting remittance inflow through legal channels.

Sonali Bank holds managers meet

A view exchange meeting of mangers of the branches of Sonali Bank in Potuakhali region was held recently.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sonali Bank Md Humayun Kabir addressed the conference as the chief guest, said a press release.

Shajahan Khandaker, assistant general manger (in charge) of Patuakhali principal office, and mangers of branches of the region attended the meeting, said a press release.

In his speech, Md Humayun Kabir stressed on enhancing quality of service, releasing remittances to the beneficiaries at a minimum time, providing easy loan to the consumers.

He urged the branch managers for taking necessary measures to increase deposits, sanctioning more loans, raising profits and recovering more classified loans, disbursing more farm loans, enhancing export-import and non-funded businesses.

ADB appoints chief economist

Changyong Rhee, Secretary General of the Presidential Committee for the G-20 Summit of the Republic of Korea, has been appointed the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) new Chief Economist.

Rhee, a Korean national, was the Vice-Chairman of the Financial Services Commission as well as chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission, and has over 20 years experience as an economist, financial advisor and academic.

An expert in debt management and fixed income markets, he has worked in the past with ADB as a leading international consultant.

“I am honored and excited to join the ADB at a time when Asia’s global role is changing and expanding. I hope to contribute to ADB’s research capacity and reputation as the key development institution in the region,” Rhee said.

In the public sector, he has provided extensive policy support to the Korean government, including serving as a member of the National Economic Advisory Council in the Office of the President, and advisor to the Bank of Korea.

SJIBL board meets

The 127th meeting of the board of directors of Shahjalal Islami Bank Limited (SJIBL) was held at its head office in the city recently.

Mohammad Solaiman, chairman of the board of directors of SJIBL, presided over the meeting, said a press release.

The meeting approved a number of investment proposals and discussed various issues relating to bank’s policy.

MTB opens exchange house in UK

Mutual Trust Bank Ltd (MTB) has launched its subsidiary ‘MTB Exchange (UK) Ltd.’ in the United Kingdom recently.

Syed Manzur Elahi, former advisor to a caretaker government, founding chairman of Mutual Trust Bank Ltd, inaugurated the enterprise at a gala ceremony held at Water-lily Business Centre in London, said a press release.

A K M Rahmatullah, MP, MTB sponsor, MA Rouf, JP, director of MTB, Allama Siddiki, deputy high commissioner of Bangladesh in UK, Iqbal Ahmed OBE, chairman of British Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bajloor Rashid, president of Bangladesh Caterers Association (BCA), Ifty Islam, managing partner of Tiger Capital Partners, also spoke at the event as guests of honour.
